Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary: Located just a few hours’ drive from Kampala, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a conservation project that offers excellent opportunities for rhino trekking. As of my last update in 2021, this sanctuary is home to several Southern white rhinos, making it an ideal spot to witness these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
▪ Book in Advance: Rhino trekking is a popular activity, and availability can be limited. To secure your spot, it’s
recommended to book your trek in advance, especially during peak travel seasons.
▪ Follow the Rangers’ Instructions: During the trek, always adhere to the guidelines provided by the experienced park rangers. Your safety and the well-being of the rhinos are of utmost importance.
▪ Respect Wildlife: Remember, you are a guest in the rhinos’ home. Maintain a safe distance and avoid making sudden movements or loud noises that might startle the animals.
▪ Support Conservation: By participating in rhino trekking, you are contributing to the preservation of these incredible creatures and their habitats. Feel good about your journey, knowing you’re making a positive impact on the rhino population.
▪ Sturdy Footwear: Comfortable, closed-toe shoes or hiking boots are essential for trekking through the uneven terrain.
▪ Long Sleeves and Pants: To protect yourself from thorny bushes and insects, pack lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants.
▪ Sun Protection: Don’t forget sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses to shield yourself from the
African sun.
▪ Water and Snacks: Carry a refillable water bottle and some energy-boosting snacks to keep you hydrated and fuelled during the trek.
▪ Age Restrictions: Rhino trekking is generally suitable for adults and older children who can follow the ranger’s instructions and handle moderate walking distances.
▪ Physical Fitness: While you don’t need to be an athlete, a reasonable level of fitness is advisable for the trek, as you’ll be walking through natural terrain.
The dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, are the best times for rhino trekking in Uganda. During these months, the weather is more predictable, and the animals are likely to be more active.
Now that you’re well-equipped with information, it’s time to embark on an unforgettable journey to witness the incredible rhinos of Uganda. Rhino trekking is an experience like no other, providing you with memories to cherish for a lifetime.
