Uganda is safer than hugging a cactus, but like anywhere else, use your street smarts e.g do not use your phone with the car window open, don’t flash your cash around, avoid wandering alone at night etc. Keep those precious belongings secure, think of your valuables as clingy friends who don’t want to be left alone!
While we’re all for adventure, let’s stay healthy too! Vaccines like yellow fever and malaria prophylaxis are highly recommended. Always stay hydrated because the heat can be unforgiving sometimes plus you need to flash your medication out of your system. So, carry your fish bowl (just don’t drink your goldfish). Also don’t forget to carry antacid or charcoal tablets, in case the food doesn’t agree with you
Embrace the vibrant Ugandan culture! Greeting locals with “Oli otya” will earn you smiles and maybe a dance partner. When visiting someone’s home, it’s good custom to not go empty handed, carry light groceries like milk, bread and sugar. You can also schedule to deliver a horse much later.
The local currency is the Ugandan Shilling. You can withdraw US Dollars at selected ATMs in the capital, Kampala, but we advise you to carry some cash, just in case. Hopefully you have clothes with hidden pockets because a fanny pack will give you away, and so will stuffing money in your socks!
Uganda offers a range of accommodations, from luxurious lodges to cosy guest houses so you can snooze in style! Make sure you book an accommodation far from a bar or discotheque when you’re in the city, otherwise your night will be filled with endless chatter and bass tones.
Time to explore! Matatus (omnibuses) are an experience in themselves. Prepare for some wild rides and memorable camaraderie with fellow passengers. If you are a bit of an adrenaline junkie, you can try the boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) although we recommend to use these in the parts of the city with light traffic. Otherwise, there are calmer options like private taxis and Uber!
Don’t fret; most Ugandans do speak English. But surprise them with some basic Luganda phrases like “Webale” (thank you) or “Mwattu” (my friend). Unfortunately, we haven’t learnt to speak lion so you’re on your own on that one.
Taste buds, brace yourselves! Delight in local dishes like matooke (cooked plantains), luwombo (steamed stew) and Rolex (a scrumptious omelette-filled chapatti). Always wash this down with a cup of black ginger tea so you can give your tummy a soft landing. Pro tip: eating a Rolex does not guarantee the ability to time travel!
